(Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton, Ore.) Pharmacy Your Health by Tom Moe R.Ph. Management of Myelofibrosis Myelofibrosis is a bone marrow condition that affects the normal growth and assembly of the body's blood cells.

Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside the hollow areas of some bones. The marrow is important because it helps produce new blood cells. In myelofibrosis, the bone marrow becomes scarred and not spongy, due to a genetic mutation that causes a very low amount of blood cells and too many white blood cells. As the condition gets worse, symptoms of low blood cells such as feeling tired easily, sluggish, easy bruising, night sweats, enlarged liver, enlarged spleen, and bone pain are often observed. The genetic mutation of a protein called JAK2 affects blood cells during myelofibrosis.

A person's physician will determine the best treatment plan based on the symptoms that a person has. Ruxolitinib (Jakafi) is the only FDAapproved medication available to help target the JAK2 gene mutation in myelofibrosis. Clinical studies have shown that this medication may reduce an enlarged spleen. To help treat severe anemia, a condition characterized by low red blood cells, certain iron-containing medications may help increase iron production. Over-thecounter iron supplements containing ferrous fumarate and ferrous sulfate may increase the number of red blood cells.
